active wood

Steaming – pressing – releasing. The project ‘active wood’ is a material research study, that demonstrates the versatility and vitality of wood.

Drawing inspiration from ancient stone quarry techniques, where wood was expanded with water to release stones, this side table design demonstrates the strength of wood through steaming, pressing, and releasing processes. Once assembled, the wood must remain moist and well-maintained; otherwise, the table could lose stability. This design requires a higher level of care compared to other furniture pieces, fostering a unique connection between the user and the piece. The high density of legs and the metal grit at the top invite light for beautiful shadow constellations. The wooden legs, which protrude from the metal grid break the visual connection between the two metal grids.
